I Am Livia

I Am Livia
I received this book from the Kindle Firsts offering for this month. Despite getting a book for free, as usual, I give my absolutely candid thoughts below.

Generally I tend to rant on about positives and negatives but this book doesn't really warrant that so much as it does simple observation. Topically speaking, this book encompasses one of the most interesting bits of Western History and it seems to do it at just about the perfect level of detail. Often historical fiction covering Roman history can be very heavy and bogged down with casts of characters numbering in the dozens. In this case the cast is light and simple and easy enough to follow at a relaxed read without feeling like you're studying for a college-level course.

Somewhat related to that, the writing too is very modern and you can choose to look at that as a positive or a negative. Personally I like my ancient Romans to sound a bit more ancient but in this case they could be just anyone from down the street. They use the occasional time-period appropriate term but it's always defined at least the first couple of times it's used.

In summary, I didn't watch "I, Claudius" but this book does catch my attention and makes me consider running off to some unnamed online video streaming service to catch up on the show. It's an inherently readable work that still manages to retain much of the color of the time period. Recommended for those who prefer their historical literature without all the thee's and thou's.

---

Thanks for reading this far. It's always my endeavor to write helpful reviews that have exactly the information you want to know to make a decision, especially on Kindle Firsts where there's a free book on the line! If my review has been helpful then great! If it's not then please leave a comment and let me know what you want to know so that I can improve not only this review but all my reviews in the future.

(2008 IPPY Award: Bronze Medalist, Psychology/Mental Health)

Learning self-help skills (eating, dressing, toileting, and personal hygiene) can be challenging for people with autism, but is essential for independence. SELF-HELP SKILLS FOR PEOPLE WITH AUTISM thoroughly describes a systematic approach that parents and educators can use to teach basic self-care to children, ages 24 months to early teens, and even older individuals.

With an encouraging tone, the authors--behavior analysts and psychologists--emphasize that it's worthwhile to devote the extra time and effort now to teach skills rather than have your child be forever dependent on others. The many case studies throughout SELF-HELP SKILLS depict individuals with deficits in specific self-care tasks, and demonstrate how a coordinated and systematic approach is effective in teaching more complex skills. For example, a 12-year-old with the self-feeding skills of a toddler (who was excluded from the school cafeteria), is taught to stay at the table to eat a full meal using utensils.

The book's beginning chapters explain the teaching process in detail:
-Specify the target skill to be taught after prioritizing the self-care tasks that are most important and will likely have the greatest success rate;
-Use task analysis to break complex skills into a series of small steps that will later be linked together to form the more complex skill;
-Apply a systematic approach to instruction that consistently employs proven methods for teaching people with autism including verbal prompting, reinforcers/rewards, chaining, graduated guidance, shaping, modeling, visual supports, etc.;
-Monitor progress by collecting and analyzing data; Modify the approach as needed to achieve the target goal.

A chapter is devoted to each of the four skill areas (eating, dressing, toileting, personal hygiene) offering detailed insight and specific instruction strategies. Appendices contain forms to complete for task analyses, instructional plans, and data collection..

Little is understood about the nature of the extraordinary talents of some people with autism. Drawing on 20 years research, Beate Hermelin describes what autistic savants do and how they do it. During her studies s he and other researchers examined savants alongside neurotypical individuals talented in the same domain, as well as people with the same level of intelligence as the savants but who had no special abilities. Hermelin describes her investigations and explores the gifts of autistic savants, in the areas of poetry, foreign language acquisition, the visual arts, music and mathematics, and reaches radical conclusions on the very nature of talent and its relationship to intelligence..

What are the historical foundations of autism and what precisely is meant by the autistic spectrum? How can we explain behavioral patterns of people with autism, young or old, and what are the major theoretical bases for understanding these? What is the latest thinking regarding diagnosis, and what are the most effective strategies for assessment, education and care for people with autism?

This book charts developments in understanding the nature and causes of autistic spectrum disorders, guiding students through theories at the psychological, neurobiological and 'first cause' levels to methods of assessment, intervention, education and support.

.
Logan overhears his grandma tell her friend he has autism, and he asks her, ”Autism is...?” She explains it to him in this beautifully illustrated story. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a disability that, according to new statistics released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on March 29, 2014, affects an estimated 1 out of 68 children (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls) in the US alone. It is a spectrum disorder because its impact on development can range from mild to severe. The areas of development most affected are social interaction and communication skills, difficulties with verbal and non-verbal communication, and leisure play. Someone wisely said, “If you have met one person with autism, you have met one person with autism.” The characteristics are different with each unique individual, and so are the ways to interact, teach, and care for them. You may or may not wish to explain the term autism to your child at a young age, but if you do, I hope this book can help make it easier for you, as it did for me when explaining autism to Logan. His inquisitive mind wanted to know, and once he read this story, even before it was illustrated, he was satisfied with the answer..

Bossypants Book

Bossypants Book

I enjoy a good memoir. It seems there's always something good to learn from other people's life experiences. And while I'm not a huge Tina Fey fan, I enjoyed her as Sarah Palin on SNL and occasionally watch 30 Rock. So after reading a review of the book, and being without anything to read at the moment, I took a chance and bought Bossypants, and I'm glad I did.

It seemed a little uneven starting out, but quickly transitioned into some very interesting pieces about her early jobs, her work with Second City, and then her transition into writing for SNL and her eventual creation of 30 Rock. Interspersed are stories about growing up and dating, her eventual marriage, and her struggles to balance work and family life, as well as some candid advice for other women on how to make it in a male-dominated industry.

Perhaps what I liked most about the book is that even though there is a lot of self-deprecating (and distancing) humor, my sense in the end was that Fey gave us an honest look at who she is: imperfect, stumbling, but always rising again, persevering, and continuing to do what she loves. I would say the book is well worth reading for any fan of Tina Fey, 30 Rock, or SNL, as well as for any woman who struggles to balance the roles of worker, spouse and mom. It was a good read!

Emotional Rescue: Essays on Love, Loss, and Life--With a Soundtrack Book Review

Emotional Rescue: Essays on Love, Loss, and Life--With a Soundtrack Book Review
As a listener of all types of music, I was initially excited about this non-fiction essays centered around music and life's great emotions. Sadly Greenman's Emotional Rescue falls short of expectations--by sprinkling both personal events and song lyrics into one book, he fails to delve into either deeply.

The book itself covers 32 essays over 200 pages. Each essay introduces 2-5 songs initially while the narrator describes a pithy theme (e.g. Fear/Bravery) with song lyrics to encapsulate the most poignant moment. Admittedly the range of songs is impressive, and the author’s love for music shines clear. For me, there is a big disconnect between reading the song lyrics on a page versus intimately knowing a song and having it resonate in your life, which is what the narrator intended. After dramatics situations are introduced (breakups, death, observing a sad stranger in an airport), the narrative often dodges by trotting out yet another lyric on paper or by pondering abstract concepts aimlessly (e.g. what is sadness?). Each pithy essay then ends unresolved and empty, leaving me frustrated as the cycle begins again.

I wish he had picked a smaller number of topics and expanded on them as characters seem to flit in and out without warning. I wish he had covered the songs themselves more deeply and explained the history in which this song came into fruition. Without either of these, the book comes across as unmemorable and rushed.

Born on a Blue Day: Inside the Extraordinary Mind of an Autistic Savant Info

.
Daniel sees numbers as shapes, colours and textures and can perform extraordinary maths in his head. He can also learn to speak a language fluently from scratch in a week. He has Savant Syndrome, an extremely rare form of Asperger's that gives him almost unimaginable mental powers, much like the Rain Man portrayed by Dustin Hoffman. Daniel has a compulsive need for order and routine - he eats exactly 45 grams of porridge for breakfast and cannot leave the house without counting the number of items of clothing he's wearing. If he gets stressed or unhappy he closes his eyes and counts. But in some ways Daniel is not at all like the Rain Man. He is virtually unique amongst people who have severe autistic disorders in being capable of living a fully independent life. It is his incredible self-awareness and ability to communicate what it feels like to live in a unique way that makes his story so powerful. Touching as well as fascinating, Born On A Blue Day explores what it's like to be special and in so doing gives us an insight into what makes us all human - our minds..

Iris Grace Info

.
'Ever since we came home with Thula, this precious magical kitten has cast a spell over Iris. They sit beside each other as Iris paints, and new doorways to communication have been opened, doors we had previously feared might be locked forever.' Iris Grace is six years old and severely autistic. For the first few years of her life she barely communicated at all - she hardly ever looked up when her parents walked into a room, she rarely smiled or spoke. Her mother Arabella despaired - Iris seemed to be trapped in her own world, unreachable. Then one day the family decided to get a cat, Thula, with whom Iris had an immediate affinity. She appeared to open up and communicate with Thula in a way that she hadn't done before. The little girl who seemed to be lost in her own world slowly blossomed. Iris is an extraordinarily gifted artist who sees the world in a profoundly vivid and visceral way, and with Thula by her side, she will sit and paint for hours. This book isn't the story of a genius or child prodigy (although Iris is almost certainly both of those things), this is the story of how a remarkable bond between a cat and a child saved a family. Beautifully written, readers will be spellbound by the story of Iris Grace and her devoted pet cat Thula..

Understanding Applied Behavior Analysis: An Introduction to ABA for Parents, Teachers, and Other Professionals (JKP Essentials Series) Description

.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is based on the premise that behavior can be influenced by changes in environment and by the reinforcing consequences of that behavior. This introductory guide to ABA demystifies the basic terminology, the underlying principles and commonly-used procedures of ABA using accessible, everyday language. Albert J. Kearney explains the kinds of learning and reinforcement processes that form the basis of ABA programs. Having covered these essential principles, he describes how the science of behavior analysis can be effectively applied to real life behavior problems. He looks at how behavior is assessed and various intervention techniques that are often employed with children who have autism and other special needs. Having laid these essential foundations, Kearney touches on more advanced topics: the applications of ABA in behavioral education, such as precision teaching and programmed instruction. Clear, accessible and with a structure that is easy-to-follow, this book is an essential introduction to the discipline of ABA and its applications for parents and professionals.

The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and Other Clinical Tales, by Oliver Sacks: Key Takeaways, Analysis, & Review Info

.

In this 30th-anniversary edition of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat, Oliver Sacks, MD, brings together more than two dozen narratives of patients with many different neurological impairments. The narratives illuminate medical details of the diseases while illustrating how those diseases play out in a patient's thoughts and actions, bringing a more human aspect to the ailments.

These neurological impairments take on many forms. Losses can be highly disruptive to a patient's life, such as Jimmie G.'s severe memory loss. However, many patients find ways to adapt to their ailments and recoup those losses in other ways, such as Mr. P., a music teacher who lost his ability to distinguish faces and objects, even mistaking his wife for his hat, who learned to sing to himself to keep from becoming disoriented; and MacGregor, who installed a level on his glasses to enable him to stand upright to correct a persistent lean....

Preschooler's Busy Book: 365 Creative Games & Activities To Occupy 3-6 Year Olds (Busy Books Series) Info

.
The Preschooler's Busy Book should be required reading for anyone raising or teaching preschool-age children, it is written with warmth and sprinkled with humor and insight.

Preschooler's Busy Book book contains 365 screen-free activities (one for each day of the year) for three- to six-year-olds using things found around the home. It shows parents, baby-sitters, and day-care providers how to:

—Save money by making your own paints, play dough, craft clays, glue, paste and other arts and crafts supplies.

—Learn how to expand your child’s arts and crafts horizons by learning how to print with rollers and sponges, make super goop and silly putty, make a paper-mache piƱata, a Chinese lantern, gingerbread people, a jellybean picture, play dough jewelry, spoon people, a pinwheel, a paper bag kite, party hats, an egg-carton butterfly, a noodle necklace, a feather headband, or a paper doll chain.

—Prevent boredom during even the longest stretches of rainy or cold weather with ideas for indoor play like newspaper golf, magnet magic, the listening game, red light/green light, and hand puppets.

—Help children learn to have fun in the kitchen making fruit kebabs, popsicles, homemade peanut butter, a happy-face sandwich, alphabet cookies, animal pancakes, finger Jell-O, popcorn ball creatures, and the best chocolate chip cookies in the whole world.

—Teach your child practical skills like setting the table, putting away the silverware, sorting socks, sewing practice, and carpentry (hammering golf tees into Styrofoam, with a toy hammer).

—Introduce your child to numbers and counting with activities like “One-Two, Buckle My Shoe,” telling time, coin and stamp collecting, sorting a mixed-up deck of cards by numbers and learning how to find today’s date on a calendar.

—Prepare your child for reading by working on an alphabet puzzle, making alphabet cookies, making an alphabet book, and connecting the dots in alphabetical order to make a picture.

—Get your child started with music and rhythm by making a pie-plate tambourine, keeping the rhythm to a song on the radio with homemade rhythm blocks or shakers, or make music with musical glasses (filled with different amounts of water).

—Get your child moving with circle dances like “Hokey Pokey,” “Skip to My Lou” “Ring Around the Rosie,” and “London Bridge.”

—Encourage your child to enjoy quiet activities like reading wordless picture books, working on puzzles, and watching clouds—and then drawing them.

—Introduce children to nature with a variety of outdoor adventures from nature walks and picnics to backyard camping, bird feeding, mud painting and making waxed leaves.

—Start children growing things by planting apple seeds, avocado seeds or garlic cloves; or learning how to grow carrots, beets or sweet potatoes by putting cuttings into water.

—Celebrate holidays and other occasions with special projects and activities for Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Easter and Passover.

—Keep children occupied on car trips by playing “I See A-B-C” or reciting “30 Days Hath September.”.

If Your Kid Eats This Book, Everything Will Still Be Okay: How to Know if Your Child's Injury or Illness Is Really an Emergency Info

.
As an Emergency Room pediatrician, Dr. Lara Zibners has seen it all. She's cared for a portion of the 25 million children in the U.S. who are taken to the ER each year-and she knows that more than 50% of these visits may be unnecessary. IF YOUR KID EATS THIS BOOK, EVERYTHING WILL STILL BE OKAY shows parents when they may need to take action, and when they might be able to just go back to bed and call their doctor in the morning. With sections such as "In the Diaper" and "His Noggin and the Nervous System," Dr. Zibners covers every part of the body and offers sound advice (for example, did you know that oil is the best remedy for dissolving superglue between body parts?), all while maintaining a lively and often hilarious tone. To the question, "What if she chokes on her vomit?" Zibners answers, "A healthy child will not choke on her own vomit, unless she is drunk or high on Grandma's sleeping pills."

Finally, no more frantic late-night searches through the "why to buy," "how to diaper," or "what to feed him" sections found in other childcare books to find out if little Franny needs to go to the ER. This book focuses on the truly important questions, like how to keep her from electrocuting herself in the first place. Not every child has a pediatrician with specialized emergency room experience living in her home. But this book just might be the next best thing.
